Great battery life and portability August 19, 2009 CLN 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
I bought this computer almost 6 weeks ago and am thrilled with it for all the standard reasons-- lightweight, portable, bright screen, etc. The computer starts up very quickly from hibernation. As a bonus, the computer fits easily in my (large) purse. I plan to buy the memory upgrade-- when I have several Firefox windows open (6-8 with 3-4 tabs in each) the computer slows down. Open Office will run, but sluggishly.
However, I don't quite understand why this computer (Aspire One AOD-250-1924) has so few reviews, but a similar model (Aspire One AOD-250-1990) has so many. The 1924 computer has Bluetooth and a slightly longer battery life than the AOD-250-1990 model. The 1990 model has a 6-cell 4800 mAh (milliAmp per hour) battery, and this computer (the 1924 model) has a 6-cell 5200 mAh battery... and thus slightly longer battery life. Today (August 18th) the 1924 is ~$20 more expensive than the 1990, but when I bought my 1924 the 1990 was ~$35 more than the 1990. Weird.
In summary, if you are 'upgrading' from an older laptop (a 2005 Dell, in my case), you won't sacrifice much by switching to this computer, and you'll benefit from great portability. This netbook is a great solution for me while I wait for Windows 7 or the means to buy a Mac.
Very impressed September 28, 2009 Boris A. Frenkel 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this netbook this weekend in [...] where it comes bundled with a case, mouse and external DVD burner. What a great, powerful toy! I immediately upgraded it to Windows 7 and I am very impressed how easy it was to install and how well this little thing performs. Unfortunately you cannot upgrade from Windows XP, you have to simply reinstall OS and then all the programs, but that has been very easy. Windows 7 found all the devices on the netbook, including webcam, microphone, speakers, card reader and bluetooth mouse. Playback of video, animated windows, loading heavy programs - you don't feel any pain. The battery life is great - I did not have a chance to compare with XP, but it lasts under Windows 7 not less than advertized, and I am pretty active user who does not like dimmed screen. The only negative thing I can say about this notebook is my fingerprints on the lid make it look pretty dirty right away. I wish it was not so shiny. Otherwise, it is a great product, highly recommended.
Fast, light, easy...Just what I was looking for. October 16, 2009 M. Minch (Los Angeles) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased my Acer netbook to take with me on a recent trip to France. I needed email access (own my own business) so I could keep in touch. The netbook worked perfectly. I had great wireless internet coverage. I was also able to make and change reservations & access maps. I'm so glad I purchased this. It made my trip a delight and reduced stress for me and my employees since they were able to communicate with me while I was on vacation. Plus I could fit it in my purse and it's not heavy. The Acer performed just as I expected - fast, easy to use, easy to transport. Now I'm working on integrating it into my everyday work life and taking it on consultations. Two thumbs up!
lite and nice November 23, 2009 John Stoddart (lafayette, la United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
computer works great for regular software and using the internet. not having a cd drive is a small issue for installing software, but not an issue after that. i recommend upgrading to 2 GB
This thing is fantastic! December 6, 2009 Justin W. Benjamin (Minneapolis) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this as a Black Friday special on a different site. But I use Amazon a lot so I thought I'd review it here as well. First thing, get a 2GB chip for this. It works just fine with 1GB, but you'll like it more with 2GB. Second, this thing is great! I immediately upgraded to Windows 7 and it actually runs faster than this machine did with XP. No joke! And it's completely usable even with only 1GB with Windows 7... WITH Aero turned on!!! Again, no joke! After I put Win 7 on it I only needed to install the touchpad drivers to stop the "click by tapping on touchpad" feature - I hate that - but it wasn't necessary. Everything else worked right out of the box with Win 7. I then resized the win partition and installed Ubuntu 9.10 in the empty space. Again, no issues at all. Wireless worked out of the box, sound worked out of the box. I was totally amazed... I figured it would be a nightmare with proprietary drivers, etc but nope. Smooth as silk. I'm writing this review on it right now. Oh, and even with Ubuntu or Win 7, battery life is WELL over 5 hours. They claim 7 hours, I'm not 100% sure on that, but it's gotta be close... I've been using it for well on 5 hours now and I've still got 2 hours left on battery. Overall, an awesome purchase and I would definitely buy another. I'm thinking about getting one for my wife actually. :) Also, it's really thin too. I was amazed at how tiny this thing is but that everything works so well. USB seems a bit slow with only 1GB ram but once I upgraded, it got WAY faster (I know it shouldn't affect that, but I'm just being honest) Keyboard is a bit small for my fat hands, but definitely within tolerable range. Wireless card is fast, haven't tried the wired connection yet. Not having a DVD drive is a pain and it doesn't seem to want to boot well off of a USB dvd drive, but it does fine using USB flash drives (use Netbootin or something like it to make bootable USBs from a cd or DVD). Runs fine with video, watched a movie ripped from DVD on it just a little while ago with no issues. Youtube on HD mode got kinda choppy, but in standard mode it worked just fine. No problems on any other sites for me. All in all, a great buy and does what it is supposed to and does it well. You're not gonna be editing full length feature films on it, but even moderately intensive programs seem to do just fine. :)
